Mental Health and Well-being

Vision

At Croxby Primary School, our vision is for all our students, staff and community to have the support they need to build lifelong coping skills and thrive. We will make this happen by:

  • Understanding the different types of emotional and mental health needs across the school and have systems in place to support appropriately
  • Actively promoting students and staff emotional wellbeing and mental health
  • Have a positive culture which regards emotional wellbeing and mental health as the responsibility of all
  • Having an effective curriculum which supports the understanding of mental health and wellbeing, recognising neurodiversity, while maintaining academic standards

Aim

Our aim is to make sure every child is happy through supporting their emotional health and wellbeing. We recognise that some life events might leave pupils vulnerable, and they may require extra emotional support at certain times. We make sure that the appropriate resources are available to pupils and staff so that they may benefit from their time at Croxby.

Our Set for Success Curriculum teaches children the core elements from the Relationship, Sex and Health Education guidance at an age-appropriate level and ensures our children can be successful, responsible citizens who can keep themselves safe in the wider world.

In our school we:

  • Encourage children to feel at ease to share any concerns or worries they may have with a trusted adult or peer.
  • Ensure every class has a worry box to provide children with a voice.
  • Help children to gain confidence and self-worth.
  • Help children to form relationships through developing their social skills.
  • Help children understand their emotions and feelings better.
  • Help children to become emotionally resilient and manage setbacks
  • Offer different levels of support (Elsa/Well-being lab/Mable Therapy/External support)
  • Parental advice and support available through the Wellbeing hub

Well-being ambassadors also play a vital role towards leading lunchtime support, clubs and assemblies. The Well-being Ambassadors include volunteers from years 5 and 6. These children are regarded as positive role models for the other children, Their roles include supporting pupil wellbeing through proactively empowering children to positively interact and to identify children that may need support. Guided by the schools Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA), the well-being ambassadors strive to support their peers daily. Everyday children can access the Wellbeing hub to talk to the ambassadors, share worries through the worry box and gain emotional knowledge and understanding from displays. The buddy benches provide the children with an area to meet new friends or seek support with friendships from the well-being ambassadors. Every Tuesday children can take time to relax in our mindfulness colouring club. Every Thursday the Well-being ambassadors read to our lower KS1 children. Books include the behaviour matters range by Sue Graves. The ambassadors meet weekly to receive training, plan events and clubs, shares ideas, plan assembles to present to the school and much more.
