British Values

British Values at Croxby Primary School

At Croxby Primary School, we are committed to preparing children to become confident, responsible and respectful citizens who can thrive in modern Britain. Our approach supports children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development, enabling them to achieve well, build positive relationships and contribute meaningfully to their community.

Our curriculum is engaging and inclusive. It promotes curiosity, reflection and high aspirations so that every child flourishes academically, socially and personally in a diverse and ever‑changing world.

Our Commitment to Fundamental British Values

We actively promote the five Fundamental British Values, as defined by the Department for Education, through our curriculum, assemblies, wider provision and school ethos:

  • Democracy
  • The Rule of Law
  • Individual Liberty
  • Mutual Respect
  • Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs

These values are embedded in daily school life and underpin our commitment to keeping children safe, valued and included.

How We Promote British Values

Democracy

Children at Croxby are encouraged to share their views and understand that their voices matter. Opportunities include:

  • Electing representatives to leadership groups such as the School Council
  • Participating in classroom discussions and votes
  • Contributing ideas about learning, events and school improvement

These experiences help children understand how democracy works and why it is essential in a fair and inclusive society.

The Rule of Law

Children learn the importance of rules in school and in wider society. They are taught:

  • Why rules and laws exist
  • How rules keep us safe and support learning
  • That everyone has a responsibility to follow them

Through clear expectations, restorative approaches and consistent routines, children learn about consequences, accountability and fairness.

Individual Liberty

We provide a safe, supportive environment where children are encouraged to:

  • Make responsible choices
  • Express their ideas and opinions
  • Develop independence and self-confidence

Children are given age appropriate freedoms within clear boundaries, helping them understand both their rights and their responsibilities.

Mutual Respect

Respect is at the heart of our school ethos. We actively promote:

  • Positive relationships
  • Kindness, inclusion and fairness
  • Understanding the impact of words and actions

Staff consistently model respectful behaviour, and these expectations are reinforced through assemblies, policies and everyday interactions.

Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs

We celebrate the diversity of our school and the wider world. Children develop understanding and tolerance through:

  • A broad and balanced Religious Education (RE) curriculum
  • Exploring different cultures, traditions and world faiths
  • Themed days, visits and events that promote diversity

Children learn that differences should be respected and valued, and that everyone deserves to be welcomed and treated with dignity.

SMSC and Curriculum Links

British Values are embedded across our SMSC provision, PSHE (Set for Success) curriculum and RE programme, helping children to discover and understand their place in society. Every subject—whether it is English, science, computing, sport or the arts—provides opportunities to explore personal development, fairness, responsibility, resilience and collaboration and respect. This ensures personal development is woven through the whole curriculum.

Child Leadership and Responsibility

We provide a range of leadership opportunities that enable children to contribute to school life, including:

  • School Council representatives
  • Eco Councillors
  • Well‑being Ambassadors
  • Year 6 Leaders and House Captains

These roles develop confidence, communication skills and a strong sense of ownership and responsibility, whilst promoting democratic participation and civic awareness.

Preparing Children for Life in Modern Britain

We recognise the importance of developing children’s understanding of the modern world. Through computing, Set for Success lessons and class discussions, children learn to:

  • Think critically
  • Recognise misinformation
  • Make safe and informed choices online
  • Act as responsible digital citizens

This prepares them to engage positively and safely with the wider world.

Safeguarding and Prevent

Promoting British Values is an essential part of our safeguarding responsibilities. By encouraging critical thinking, respect for diversity and the confidence to challenge prejudice, we help protect children from risks such as extremism.

This work supports the aims of the Prevent Strategy and reinforces our commitment to keeping children safe.

Our Vision

At Croxby Primary School, we aim to nurture and develop children who are:

  • Reflective and responsible
  • Curious and open‑minded
  • Respectful and compassionate
  • Confident in themselves and respectful of others’ rights and beliefs

We want every child to leave Croxby well prepared for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life in modern Britain.
